Gritty Spanish Review: A Genuine Look at Real Native Speaker Conversations
As someone learning Spanish, you might spend a long time mastering polite phrases for formal interactions. However, real-world conversations are not always courteous, particularly in casual or personal contexts.
This is the gap that Gritty Spanish fills—a program that showed me how to react when faced with insults, arguments, yelling, or even a threatening situation.
A Brief Look at Gritty Spanish
Gritty Spanish is designed for Spanish learners who want to experience the language as it's genuinely spoken, without censorship. The program concentrates on developing listening and reading skills.
Every Gritty Spanish program is structured around a series of audio dialogues featuring native speakers from various countries, accompanied by PDF transcripts that present the conversation in both Spanish and English.
The term "Gritty" indicates that these are not the formal conversations typically found in classrooms or textbooks. You'll encounter social interactions that demonstrate the use of informal language, slang, and strong expressions in context.
Gritty Spanish Features
Four Levels to Choose From
Gritty Spanish provides four different options tailored to your proficiency level:
• Beginner to low/mid intermediate: Gritty Spanish Basics ($29.99) • Mid/high beginner to intermediate: Gritty Spanish Beginnings ($34.99) • Intermediate to advanced: Gritty Spanish Original ($44.99) *censored version available • Intermediate to advanced: Gritty Spanish Parte II ($49.99)
You can purchase them in bundled packs for savings. Each level includes 28 to 36 lessons and 1,000 to 2,500+ multiple-choice quizzes to assess your understanding.
Instead of a recurring subscription, buying a Gritty Spanish series grants you permanent access to the materials through their app for iOS devices or the web application.
Over the last week, I tested the advanced bundle, which contains both Gritty Spanish Original and Gritty Spanish: Parte II.
Episodes Covering a Variety of Situations
After you choose and buy your program version, you gain access to all its episodes via the app. You can also sample the first few episodes before committing to the full series.
I noticed the episodes cover a wide range of scenarios you could actually encounter. The Basics and Beginnings versions include situations like shopping, bank visits, discussing a film, and seeing a doctor.
The more advanced versions delve into topics such as gossiping with friends and taking a taxi home after an evening out. They also address more mature subjects like road rage, a visit to a strip club, and relationship infidelity.
Quality Audio
All audio files are exceptionally clear, and the dialogues are delivered at a steady, understandable pace, despite the presence of slang and various accents. You can preview some audio samples on the Gritty Spanish website.
The audio also incorporates ambient background noises to enhance realism. If a conversation happens on a subway, you'll hear the screech of train brakes, conductor announcements, and the murmur of passengers.
Besides the main audio, every episode includes:
- A version of the audio slowed down by 30%
- A version without the background noise
- A PDF transcript of the dialogue in Spanish and English
- On-screen "Lyrics" that appear when listening on your Android or iOS device (so you can read along without opening the PDF)
Interactive PDFs
The interactive PDFs display each dialogue with a short summary, a character list noting their origins, and the transcript in both Spanish and English.
In the Spanish transcript, certain words and phrases are hyperlinked, allowing you to click for additional information.
In the Basics and Beginnings series, these links often lead to grammar notes and verb conjugations for phrases like “estoy disfrutando,” while the advanced series typically explains country-specific slang and expressions like “¿Quihubo?”, a Colombian greeting for "What’s up?"
Although this requires switching between the dialogue and the explanations, I found this feature extremely helpful for grasping meanings and acquiring new vocabulary in context.
The “Say That Again” Button
While listening to the audio, a convenient button lets you rewind two seconds. Double-clicking it rewinds four seconds, and so on.
This is particularly useful when you miss a part and want to replay it without losing your spot, or if you wish to practice pronunciation by repeating a word or phrase.
Diverse and Realistic Spanish
The Gritty Spanish dialogues are voiced by native speakers from different Spanish-speaking nations, exposing you to a variety of accents and dialects, including regional slang and strong language.
This program offers a valuable glimpse into the more raw aspects of Latin American Spanish, which is particularly useful if you live in New York City or another multicultural area where multiple dialects converge.
Note the speakers' nationalities listed at the start of each transcript. If you plan to travel across Latin America, listen to all of them. But if your travels are limited to specific countries, prioritize episodes featuring speakers from those regions.
The Advantages of Gritty Spanish
Appropriate for a wide range of skill levels
Gritty Spanish provides four options for different proficiency levels. For each level, it helps address the shortcomings of formal language courses and textbooks—gaps usually filled only by real-life experience.
Even advanced learners with solid grammar might not know how to curse effectively or may find it hard to comprehend informal Spanish spoken with a thick Dominican accent.
Great for conversational Spanish
This program is excellent for enhancing your conversational fluency (your capacity to speak and understand Spanish in dialogues) because:
- Extensive listening practice acclimates your ears to the sounds of Spanish.
- Reading along with the PDFs and utilizing the program's learning tools promotes better comprehension of spoken Spanish.
- Exposure to casual Spanish in various regional accents gives you insight into how natives typically talk.
While Spanish TV shows and movies offer authentic dialogue, this program distills it to the audio component, supported by transcripts, allowing you to concentrate on listening without visual distractions.
Teaches you how to express yourself naturally
The authentic Spanish taught in this program enables you to express yourself as you would in your native tongue. You'll avoid sounding like a formal robot, betraying a textbook-based education.
When I lived abroad, I often felt my Spanish-speaking friends didn't truly know me unless they heard me speaking English. Over time, I learned to express myself using the language's vibrant slang and colloquialisms.
Using Gritty Spanish could have accelerated this process. The program helps you discover your unique Spanish voice, enabling you to sound authentic and express your true personality.
Prepares you to socialize with Spanish speakers
Most language programs address basic scenarios like asking for directions or ordering food. Gritty Spanish, however, extends far beyond to social situations such as chatting with friends at a club or going on a first date.
If your goal is to move past formalities and actually build friendships with Spanish speakers, this program familiarizes you with the language needed to connect on a social level.
This means you'll understand conversations about someone flirting at a club or a couple arguing over social media gossip.
The Disadvantages of Gritty Spanish
Lacks writing and speaking components
This program is centered on audio: you listen and learn. The transcripts introduce a reading element, and the explanations in the Basics and Beginnings versions cover some grammar, but there are no exercises for practicing it.
While you can pause the audio and repeat phrases, the program does not include activities for generating language spontaneously. This is a common shortcoming in language programs, so we suggest complementing it with practice through a language exchange with a native speaker.
Not ideal for true beginners
The language used can be complex at times, making this program better suited for intermediate learners and beyond. However, features like the clickable transcripts with notes and the slowed-down audio make the dialogues accessible to upper-beginners.
If you have a basic foundation and have been concentrating on conversational Spanish, you should manage. In the early learning stages, you can use Gritty Spanish as a supplementary resource alongside a more structured program.
Teaches vulgar language
Potential users should know that the two advanced versions (Original and Part II) contain explicit language and situations unsuitable for children.
While this is a major draw for many wanting to learn real Spanish, it may deter others. Note that the Original version offers a censored option, allowing more advanced learners who prefer PG content to enjoy most of the program.
If you opt for the uncensored version, remember that some language might be inappropriate or offensive in certain contexts and with specific individuals.
How Gritty Spanish Stacks Up Against Other Programs
Overall, Gritty Spanish is a rather unique language-learning program. It incorporates the genuine, unfiltered speech that many programs like Pimsleur and Babbel omit. This makes it excellent for advanced learners residing in Spanish-speaking countries who wish to comprehend and use stronger language.
However, it lacks the formal instructional elements and gamified features found in programs like Duolingo and LingoDeer. There are no points or rewards, and progressing to higher levels simply means finishing one series and buying the next. If you need competitive motivation to learn, a more gamified program might be a better fit.
Lifetime access with a single purchase allows you to progress through the Gritty Spanish program at your own pace, which is great for busy learners. But depending on your learning speed, you might prefer a subscription-based service like Lingflix, which regularly adds new content.
Lingflix also includes a video component absent in Gritty Spanish, adding an entertainment factor that maintains engagement. Lingflix uses authentic videos—such as music videos, movie trailers, news, and inspiring talks—and transforms them into personalized language lessons. You can try Lingflix free for 2 weeks.
