15 Deep Korean Quotes
The Korean language and culture have produced numerous profound quotes that resonate with people worldwide. Whether you're learning Korean or not, anyone can gain from learning a few wise and relevant sayings to help navigate the day.
Here, we will review 15 impactful Korean quotes that are worth committing to memory.
1. 해안이 보이지 않는 것을 이겨낼 용기가 없다면 절대로 바다를 건널 수 없다.
English translation: You can’t cross the ocean if you don’t have the courage to lose sight of the shore.
This is a valuable quote to remember when pursuing your goals. For some Koreans who decide to go overseas, for work or education, this saying may feel particularly personal.
It also provided me with solace when I relocated to another state for university; as uncertain and unfamiliar as it felt, the journey across that ocean was ultimately rewarding.
2. 개떡같이 말해도 찰떡같이 알아듣는다.
English translation: Even if you speak nonsense, you’ll be understood perfectly.
It's interesting to note the words used in this quote: 개떡 and 찰떡. Both refer to rice cakes, but the first is a coarse, unevenly shaped one, while the latter is perfectly formed.
This light-hearted saying describes those times when you might be rambling or struggling to express yourself clearly, but the listener still grasps your meaning. I often connect this quote to my own attentive friends and family, who are skilled at deciphering my muddled speech.
3. 서당 개 삼 년에 풍월한다.
English translation: A dog at a schoolhouse can recite poems in three years.
This humorous quote highlights a simple reality: with sufficient practice and immersion, anyone can learn or accomplish almost anything, so don't be discouraged if you don't succeed immediately.
Just don't go looking for talking dogs in Korea—they are quite adept at pretending they can't.
4. 말은 나면 제주도로 보내고 사람은 나면 서울로 보내라.
English translation: Send horses to Jeju Island and send people to Seoul.
Jeju Island is a beautiful, lush location with a landscape and culture distinct from the modern energy of Seoul. Indeed, the island is also known for its many horses (I've been horseback riding there myself, and it was a great experience).
This saying means that individuals thrive in an environment suited to their desires and requirements. By the way, it's not that you'll never see a horse in Seoul—it would just seem very out of place.
5. 웃음은 최고의 명약이다.
English translation: Laughter is the best medicine.
As the one who often tells jokes among my friends, I fully agree with this quote. Bringing laughter to others, even in tough times, is a gift I always appreciate.
If you haven't experienced distinctive Korean humor yet, I suggest watching some Korean films, TV shows, and dramas. You might just find a new comedic style you love.

6. 시간은 금이다.
English translation: Time is gold.
This isn't just a version of the English saying "time is money." From my experience, Korean people can be quite sentimental, and reminiscing about the past is a common activity for both the elderly and the young (especially after a few glasses of soju).
And they can talk about memories at length—I've had occasions where I was seated at the dinner table (for an hour, on a good day) listening to my father tell stories from his youth for what felt like the hundredth time.
Consider time the precious resource it is, if only so your Korean elders no longer feel the need to remind you every day.
7. 자신을 사랑하라. 그래야 남을 사랑할 수 있다.
English translation: Love yourself. Only then can you love others.
I believe most of us would agree that we could all use more self-love. This is especially true in South Korea, which has a demanding culture often filled with social pressures and high expectations.
Remember to give yourself credit or a kind gesture when you've earned it or need it. I've been working to make this a regular practice, and it's surprising how a brief moment of self-recognition can improve your mood and how you view those around you.
8. 수시로 안부를 전하라. 눈과 귀에서 멀어지면 마음에서도 멀어진다.
English translation: Say hello frequently. Out of sight and ear, out of mind.
Sometimes, losing touch with someone is intentional—other times, it can be an unintended result of forgetting to send an occasional greeting or check-in.
I've observed that for Koreans, particularly among older generations, it's quite significant to check in regularly (every few days, if possible) to show they are still in your thoughts. With that in mind, when did you last call your parents?
9. 콩 심은 데 콩 난다. 좋은 씨앗만 심어라.
English translation: Plant beans, and the beans sprout. So plant good seeds.
It may sound repetitive, but the quote essentially means "you reap what you sow." During my childhood, this was a phrase I heard often whenever I considered slacking off or being rude to someone.
Even a small effort to do good now can prevent problems later on.
10. 인생은 드라마다. 연출하고 연기하라.
English translation: Life is a drama. Direct and act.
There's no need to convince Koreans, the masters of the drama genre, of this quote's truth. It's also intended to offer some comfort when facing life's ups and downs.
There will be times when you have control and times when you don't. Either way, you have a role to perform, so keep moving forward.
11. 모두가 잠든 밤에 피는 꽃도 있다.
English translation: There are flowers that bloom at night when everyone is asleep.
This quote can be understood in a couple of ways. It implies that a person's potential and abilities can develop and shine even when no one is watching (as a night-loving introvert, I prefer this meaning).
Another interpretation is that someone who works diligently or late into the night, even while others rest, can blossom into something beautiful and remarkable. While this view might hold some truth, it's perhaps not the best to promote among Korean students and office workers—they already have enough responsibilities, and missing sleep shouldn't be one of them.
12. 칭찬에 앞장서라. 적군도 아군이 된다.
English translation: Take the initiative to compliment. Then even enemies become allies.
Did you think Koreans were just being polite for no reason? Actually, it's a strategic approach to winning the daily battles of life. You might be surprised how many adversaries I've disarmed with a simple positive remark about something as ordinary as their style.
All jokes aside, it never hurts to be genuinely kind. Overwhelm them with kindness, as the expression suggests.
13. 백문이 불여일견.
English translation: It is better to see something once than to hear about it 100 times.
This is a perfect example of how the Korean language can express a deep idea with very few words. Many Koreans I've encountered are vivid and detailed storytellers, but sometimes words can become confusing when repeated too often.
It's unfortunate that cameras weren't always available when the events they describe took place.
14. 가지가 많은 나무는 바람 잘 날 없다.
English translation: A tree with many branches is weak to wind.
In my youth, I knew many Korean families with several children. This exact saying was commonly shared by the parents while we children were causing chaos.
The quote refers to the idea that having more people to look after makes you more exposed and likely to face difficulties. We all know that one child whose misbehavior brought a significant amount of stress and frustration to their entire family.
15. 새로운 언어는 새로운 삶이다.
English translation: A new language is a new life.
Finally, a wonderful quote for all language learners, whether you're studying Korean or another tongue. I'm sure no detailed explanation is needed—you already understand that learning a language creates access to countless opportunities.
This is likely the reason you began your studies, and it remains a valid motivation, so well done and continue your efforts!
If any of these quotes resonated with you, try to memorize them in both their original Korean and English translations.
More than just offering a list of motivational phrases, I hope I've encouraged or deepened your interest and appreciation for the Korean language!
