A firm understanding of logistics terminology is critical for smooth operations, whether your role is in supply chain management, transportation, warehousing, or customs clearance.

Essential English for Logistics Vocabulary

Here is a list of frequent terms and abbreviations found in the logistics field.

Advanced Shipment Notice (ASN)

This document provides your customer with all necessary details about an upcoming delivery—such as the type, quantity, and condition of the goods, along with packaging and other relevant shipment information. It is sent ahead of time so the customer knows what to expect and when.

You should ask Sheila to send the ASN to the customer soon so they are aware of the product arrival time.

Air Taxi

This is a small commercial aircraft that typically operates short flights on demand. There are limits on the amount of cargo and number of passengers it can carry. It's similar to calling a taxi when you're in a rush, but the vehicle is an airplane.

Since highway traffic will be heavy, we booked an air taxi for our VIP guests to ensure they reach the venue on time and without difficulty.

Backorder

Simply put, a backorder occurs when a retailer places an order for an item that is temporarily out of stock. The customer has enough trust in the company to wait for the order to be fulfilled and shipped later.

Jack has finally managed all the outstanding backorders from our customers, and our inventory records are now current.

Bilateral Contract

This is a mutual agreement between two parties where each promises to do something for the other. Both sides are obligated to uphold their part of the deal.

If you agree to perform a service for a company and they agree to pay you for it, you are forming a basic bilateral contract.

Blanket Purchase Order

Also known as a blanket order or a standing order, this is a type of purchase order where a client arranges for repeated, scheduled deliveries of large quantities of goods, often to benefit from discounted prices.

Jane uses a blanket purchase order to maintain her product supply. This ensures business stability and allows her to acquire what she needs at lower costs.

Business-to-Business (B2B)

This is a business model where a company markets and sells its products and services to other businesses. In essence, the commercial transaction happens between businesses rather than with an end consumer.

For her new jewelry startup, Maya recently purchased a large quantity of charms and beads directly from a wholesale supplier that focuses on B2B transactions.

Business-to-Consumer (B2C)

This is the opposite of B2B and the model most people know, where the transaction is directly between the business and the end customer. The marketing strategies used here are quite different from those in B2B.

Typically, B2C strategies aim to emotionally connect with the customer to drive a purchase, while a B2B approach is more centered on practical value and utility.

Consignor and Consignee

The consignor is the person (or company) that sells or ships the goods to the recipient, known as the "consignee." The consignor is usually the "seller" and retains ownership of the goods until the consignee pays for them.

According to the transportation document, Aditya is the consignor, and you need to make the required payment to him upon delivery of the goods.

Customs Officer

A customs officer is a law enforcement official who represents the government and ensures that people and goods legally enter or exit a country.

The customs officer at the port intercepted him attempting to smuggle prohibited substances and immediately seized them.

Distribution Network

This term describes the interconnected system of storage facilities and transportation methods that guarantees goods are efficiently delivered from the manufacturer to the end customer. The distribution network is a component of the supply chain (see definition below).

Establishing and maintaining a robust distribution network is a crucial skill for success in logistics.

Freight

This refers to goods transported in large quantities by land, sea, or air. It can also mean the charges paid for moving these goods.

Joe worked for several months as a truck driver, transporting freight along the highway from one city to another during the night.

Inbound Logistics and Outbound Logistics

Inbound logistics involves the activities related to receiving, storing, and distributing incoming goods and materials to a company. Outbound logistics, conversely, deals with the processes of storing, handling, and transporting goods from a company to its customers.

Amrita leads the inbound logistics team, so direct all your questions about the manufacturer to her, and she will handle them.

Inventory

This refers to all the goods, raw materials, or finished products that a business holds for production, sale, or distribution purposes.

Maintaining an up-to-date company inventory list is essential for quickly identifying any missing or stolen goods.

Lading

This term usually means the act of loading cargo or goods onto a transport vehicle. However, it can sometimes refer to the cargo itself.

The lading process was lengthy and demanding, but we completed it carefully, and the ship has now departed with the cargo.

Logistics Service Provider (LSP)

As the name implies, LSPs are third-party companies that offer logistics services to businesses and clients.

We suggested that Michael investigate an LSP's qualifications and history before hiring one to manage the distribution and transportation for his business.

North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA)

This is a trade agreement between Canada, the U.S., and Mexico that addresses various issues, including customs, intellectual property rights, and government procedures. NAFTA took effect on January 1, 1994.

I work in logistics for a North American importer and exporter, so I must be well-versed in the terms of NAFTA.

Please note that as of July 1, 2020, NAFTA was superseded by the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). More details are available on the International Trade Administration web page.

Order Picking

Order picking is the process of gathering items from inventory before they are shipped to the customer. It is one of the fundamental warehousing operations.

Sayan recently started a job collecting items before shipment, and the company is very satisfied with his efficient order picking; he might be promoted soon.

Order Processing

This encompasses all the various tasks involved in fulfilling a customer's order until completion. It generally includes picking, sorting, packing, and handing off the goods to the shipping carrier.

Efficient order processing is a defining characteristic of any successful wholesale retail company.

Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM)

An OEM is typically a company that produces goods used as components in another company's products. However, the term's meaning has broadened and can now sometimes refer to the company that receives and uses these goods.

I chose to buy the car part directly from the OEM to guarantee compatibility and quality.

Owner’s Risk

When an item is transported at the owner’s risk, it means the owner is liable for insuring it against any potential loss or damage that might happen during transit. The owner assumes the financial responsibility and should secure suitable insurance to protect the item while it's being moved.

When shipping goods internationally, the company chose 'owner’s risk' terms to avoid liability for any possible losses or damages during transportation.

Packaging

Packaging includes all the processes and materials used to enclose, transport, and safeguard a product until it is delivered. It can also refer to the design and creation of the packages themselves.

Sarita is a packaging engineer for a small business, and her role involves the optimal use of paper and cardboard resources.

Pareto Principle

Also known as the 80/20 rule, this principle suggests that 80% of results come from 20% of the causes or efforts. To boost productivity, you identify that crucial "20%" and focus your resources on improving it.

The Pareto principle can be applied in many areas of life, so it's important to know your key "20%" and dedicate more time and resources to enhancing it.

Pooling

This is a common term in shipping where multiple shipments from different carriers are consolidated into a single truckload to lower shipping costs.

Combining your delivery goods through pooling is an effective method to optimize your company's budget and is also better for the environment.

Preferential Rate

This term relates to customs payments. It is a special, lower tariff rate applied to products imported from certain "preferred" countries.

Fortunately, you can pay your country's preferential rate for exporting these items.

Request for Information (RFI)

An RFI is a formal document used to gather written details about a vendor, product, supplier, or service.

Jackie submitted several RFIs to select the most dependable supplier for his goods.

Route Optimization

The process of identifying the most efficient path or sequence for transportation to reduce time, cost, or distance.

The logistics team used route optimization software to cut transportation expenses and shorten delivery times for our products.

Supply Chain

The complete, interconnected network of organizations, people, activities, and resources responsible for moving a product from the supplier to the end customer.

Effective supply chain management is a primary goal of any logistics operation, so the person in charge must oversee every detail meticulously.

Transportation

This is a fundamental component of any logistics operation, involving the movement of goods by land, sea, or air, as well as the procedures required to ensure this movement is smooth and efficient.

I was responsible for transportation, which meant coordinating with truck drivers to deliver our goods to the warehouse.

Unit Loads

The practice of combining individual items in shipping containers into single, larger units for handling.

I need to determine the precise number of unit loads that can be stored in this warehouse.

Warehousing

The activity of storing goods that are meant for distribution and sale at a future date. The commercial building where these goods are kept is called a warehouse.

Tanya reduced her startup plans because the costs for warehousing were prohibitively high.
